Golf Team attends International Events
Aphrodite Hills Golf continues to receive high exposure at major golf events.
  • In August, Aphrodite Hills Golf was represented at the BMW Open in Munich, Germany.
  • In July, the presence of golf in Cyprus was strongly seen at both The Open at St. Andrews in Scotland and at the Scandinavian Masters in Sweden. The Open 2005 was a historic event because it was the last game for the legendary golfer, Jack Nicklaus, and it was a major win for Tiger Woods.

Both events were promoted by Panayiotis Michaelides, Golf General Manager, and attended by Pauline Klimentos, Golf Marketing Executive.

It is the third straight year that Aphrodite Hills Golf has exhibited at these major golf tournaments, generating mass exposure for Cyprus as a golf destination. The golf team also reported great satisfaction on the overwhelming interest generated for the resort.

Golf course developments in Cyprus
By now you'll probably have seen press coverage concerning the long awaited Government announcement on this topic. Our understanding is that their strategic policy aim will allow development of up to a total of 14 golf courses (including those currently operating) and that we are now into a 6-month period for the submission of costed business plans for relevant golf development applications. While offering incentives for such developments, the Government has indicated that it will, as we recommended in our Strategy Paper to them, apply stringent environmental and quality criteria while also ensuring that such applications do not simply become vehicles for major property development to the exclusion of the golf element. We are currently seeking precise details of the criteria to be applied but anticipate that each application will rightly face very demanding review to ensure the viability, quality, environmental acceptability and sustainability of the projects. Nonetheless our information is that there are already a number of applications ready to go and we anticipate that in the next few years we may see the evolution of perhaps 6 new courses across the island. Once again we'll keep you informed as and when we learn more.

New club, new Cyprus Golf Federation member in waiting, new competition?
And all the above comes in the shape of the Limassol Golf Club (LGC). Formed early this year and comprising some 60 enthusiasts from the Limassol area, the club is in the final stages of obtaining all necessary operating licences and approvals, at which time they have already stated their intention of applying for CGF membership. If all goes well we hope to welcome them aboard before year's end. In the meantime they have already inaugurated a series of well-attended competitions at various courses (their "home course" being Secret Valley), and have laid down a challenge to all existing on-island clubs, including those on the British bases and Tengis Topel club in northern Cyprus, by proposing a stable ford team competition on 18th September at Aphrodite hills to decide the "Best Club in Cyprus". Check your notice boards or with your Committee for details but information at time of writing suggests that LGC are already getting positive responses. We wish them well with this endeavour and with all their future golfing ventures, and we look forward to working with them.
